What is a cell?

Prokaryotic Cells

"Pro" (Before) + "Kary" (Nucleus)

Example: Bacteria

Prokaryotic cells are simple unicellular organisms. They do not have a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles.

Plasmid

Small loops of extra DNA found in many bacteria.

Flagellum

A tail-like structure that enables the bacterium to move.

Capsule

Protects the cell from being destroyed by white blood cells.

Eukaryotic Cells

"Eu" (True) + "Kary" (Nucleus)

Examples: Plants, Animals, Fungi, and Protists
