Observing Cells

"Cells are the functional building blocks of all organisms."

Microscope Cell Biology Magnification

Learning Objectives

  • 🔬 State the function and label microscope parts.
  • ⚙️ Describe the functions of different parts.
  • 💧 Learn to prepare a slide and view specimens.

Virtual Microscope Lab

Interact with the labelled parts and adjust focus to see the cells clearly.

Types of Microscopes

While we use light microscopes in the lab, scientists also use electron microscopes for much higher resolution.

  • Light Microscope: Uses glass lenses and visible light. Max magnification ~1500x.
  • Electron Microscope: Uses beams of electrons. Max magnification ~2,000,000x!

Cell Theory

All living organisms are made of cells. They are the functional building blocks of life.

Part Matching Lab

Match the microscope part to its correct function.

Preparing a Slide

Follow these standard protocols to prepare your specimen for observation.

Pro Tip: Lower the coverslip at an angle to avoid trapping air bubbles!
